Virginia Highlands: An Intown Neighborhood With a Great Vibe

Known for its historic bungalows, its eclectic shopping and dining, and its pedestrian friendliness, Virginia Highland is arguably one of intown Atlanta’s most popular neighborhoods. Built around (and named after) the famous intersection of Virginia Avenue and North Highland Avenue, “VaHi” (as the locals call it) began as a streetcar suburb around the turn of last century, and over the years has developed into a collective of seven commercial villages with its own special vibe and distinctive urban flair.

Imagine walking out of your bungalow or historic Tudor-style home to enjoy breakfast or lunch at a sidewalk café; chatting it up with friends at a nearby coffeehouse; picking up fresh produce each Saturday at the Morningside Farmer’s Market; browsing through VaHi’s trendy clothing stores, or treasure hunting in one of its numerous antique shops and art galleries. Imagine stepping out in the evening for tapas at Pura Vida, gelato at Paolo’s, and some of the best live blues in Atlanta at Blind Willie’s. It’s all here, all within walking distance. This is just a little of what caused Creative Loafing to name VaHi as the “best overall neighborhood” in 2011.

The residents of Virginia Highland form a tight-knit community, with its civic association (vahi.org) communicating regularly with residents via a bi-weekly email newsletter called the Voice. VaHi is also widely known for its annual Summerfest, a 30-year tradition that began as a block party and has grown into a massive two-day arts and music festival drawing thousands into the neighborhood each June.

Because of this neighborhood’s rich tradition, colorful urban vibe and overall popularity, homes in Virginia Highland are obviously in high demand—however, with homes starting in the $400,000s, this vibrant intown Atlanta neighborhood may be more affordable than you think.
