We love Atlanta for its big city appeal with a smattering of small-town, southern sensibilities. It boasts a huge economy with a strong Fortune 500 showing, while simultaneously offering a robust independent market that gives the ATL its charm. We are experts in all things Atlanta, but even we were surprised by some the the notable and entertaining facts that make this city unique.
1. The historic Varsity restaurant on the corner of Spring Street and North Avenue slings more Coca-Cola each year than any other vendor in the world. This makes this Midtown staple our hometown hero’s hometown hero!
2. Atlanta holds another world record. Every Fourth of July over 45,000 runners race through the Buckhead to Midtown neighborhoods for the annual Peachtree Road Race. But did you know each year the race makes history as the largest 10k race in the world?
3. Grant Park houses Zoo Atlanta with some of the most exotic and some of the most endangered animals on the planet. But, don’t get caught tying one of those giraffes to a telephone pole or street lamp or you’ll incur a fine. In Atlanta, this law is still on the books.
4. In recent years Atlanta has been a hip-hop culture stand out, but in 1929 the Atlanta Ballet was founded and is touted as the oldest ballet company in the country.
5. The Atlanta-metro is not just the eighth largest economy in the United States, it is the 17th largest economy on the planet. With the busiest airport in the world and 16 Fortune 500 companies calling Atlanta home, it is certainly a powerhouse of opportunity.
6. With tons of mainstream retailers and independent boutiques readily available, Atlanta is known as a southern shopping Mecca. But it’s still a modest place! It’s illegal to dress a mannequin in Atlanta without closing the curtains.
7. What was Atlanta called before it was Atlanta? It’s first name was Terminus because it was at the end of a railroad. Now that name is used for the large building on the corner of Peachtree Street and Piedmont Road in Buckhead. After Terminus phased out the city took a pit stop as Marthasville before finally landing on Atlanta.
8. Lastly, although its a stretch to call Rome the Atlanta-metro area it’s worth noting another world record. Rome’s Berry College is the world’s largest college campus. With acre upon sprawling acre this campus is a reprieve from the bustling city.
