Situated in the DeKalb County region of Georgia, Dunwoody is a northern suburb of Atlanta with a history as rich as any other steeped-in-legacy section of the U.S. The city became incorporated on December 1, 2008 and as of the 2010 Census boasted a total population of 46,267. As a matter of historical relevance, the Dunwoody area was pioneered in the early 1830s and was named for Mayor Charles Dunwody (1828 to 1905); interestingly, the additional “o” found in the “Dunwoody” city reference was the result of an incorrect spelling of the Mayor’s name on a banking note. Indeed, one of the city’s most historic structures traces its roots back to 1829, the Ebenezer Primitive Baptist Church at the corner of Roberts Drive and Spalding Drive still active and home to one of Dunwoody’s oldest cemeteries. In 1881, the Roswell Railroad was cemented into Dunwoody’s history as well, and due to its inception the city developed into a small crossroads community – a community that continued to expand and prosper even in the wake of the railroad’s elimination in 1921. Dunwoody kept a rural geographical standing until suburban developed was initiated in the 1960s…and today’s Dunwoody continues that growth as a place many people call home.

Local Attractions

Often times wearing the moniker which states “Smart people – Smart city,” Dunwoody boasts a number of local attractions and things to do. Beyond the retail extravaganza experience offered by this charming city, venues such as Brook Run Park and Donaldson-Bannister Farm beckon those with a penchant for the natural – and historic – side of the Atlanta suburb. Donaldson-Bannister Farm, in particular, is an ultra-historical two-story home built in the mid-1870s by W.J. Donaldson just following the end of the Civil War. Members of the Donaldson family, including patriarch W.J., are buried in the small family cemetery on the north side of the property. This attraction has become a go-to staple for those seeking a scenic, unique location for a wedding or even family reunion…in the best traditions of Georgia.

Schools & Education

Dunwoody boasts eight elementary schools including Austin, Vanderlyn, Dunwoody, Chestnut, Kingsley, Deo Preparatory School of GA, and Atlanta North School. The Deo Preparatory School of GA and Atlanta North School also serve as middle schools as well. Dunwoody High is the city’s high school.
