Druid Hills / Emory – Mixing Technology, College Life & the Suburbs

The Emory / Druid Hills  area lies on the east side of metro Atlanta in DeKalb County and is comprised of the Emory University area, the CDC complex and several smaller areas to the north.   It is also known as Toco Hills, Briarcliff and North Druid Woods.

The neighborhood is close to midtown Atlanta and is re-developing across the entire area.   Homes in the neighborhood are generally pricier than other areas of Atlanta and represent an attractive series of communities.   DeKalb History Center in nearby Decatur also provides a variety of resources available to DeKalb residents.

Several homeowners associations exist in the area, each of which has a program of events and community issues that they promote.   North Druid Woods, Woodland Hills, Merry Hills, the Lindbergh-La Vista Corridor Coalition, LaVista Park Civic Association and Clairmont Heights Civic Association each represent a portion of the community and all are active in civic issues.

Emory University, now 175 years old, has been at the heart of the neighborhood since it moved to DeKalb County in 1915.   The University is considered a premier academic institution with over 15,000 students.   Like any university and the surrounding town, the school has a significant impact on the surrounding residents and their activities.   Intercollegiate sporting events are available for local residents to attend.   The Schwartz Center for the Performing Arts hosts professional and student performances throughout the year.   Lullwater Park is over 100 undeveloped acres where automobiles are not allowed.   It has hiking trails and other outdoor facilities available to local residents.   In general, the University is a significant resource for those living in the Emory neighborhood.

It’s Spring Festival Weekend!

The 3rd weekend in April 2012, the 20th, 21st, and 22nd, is a busy one in Atlanta and launches the Festival Season.  No less than 5 Festivals take place this weekend within the metro Atlanta area.  We’ll review the 5 Festivals below.  You’re sure to find any number if fun activities to fill your weekend!

The SweetWater 420 Festival  -  This festival corresponds with Earth Day each year and is held in historic Candler Park.   The festival runs for 3 days and includes a 5k run, concerts, comedy shows, food and drink and special events for the kids.    Check the schedule of activities and plan your weekend.

 

The Bear on the Square Mountain Festival  -  Held in Dahlonega, the festival has the mission of preserving and celebrating the culture of the Southern Appalachians through the presentation of music, traditional craft and folkways.    The festival is full activities of all sorts:   A Mainstage, Live Country Auction, Mountain Marketplace, Festival Food, Master Classes, Workshops, Music on the Square, Dancing on the Square and various Kid’s Activities.  If you enjoy the culture of the Southern Appalachians, the music, food and/or the crafts, this is the festival for you.

Druid Hills Tour of Homes & Artist Market  -  This festival is all about art and architecture.   Put on by the Druid Hills Civic Association, this is considered the premiere tour of homes in Atlanta, and celebrates the beauty, tradition, and future of the Druid Hills neighborhood.    This year’s exhibit also features a special collection of paintings created by chimpanzees as part of the Children of Conservation, a global organization founded by Michele and Kerry Stumpe, promoting wildlife conservation in third world countries.   The Druid Hills Artist Market is a juried, indoor and outdoor market featuring high caliber works in a wide price range.   The Market is located in the historic Stonehenge Mansion at 1410 Ponce de Leon Avenue.

FSA International Heritage Festival  -  Learn about the traditions of different countries through demonstrations, food, entertainments and more.  Explore the parallels among cultures while learning about each country.  Appreciate the legacies of the citizens of this great nation!   The festival will be held at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater at Encore Park on Saturday, April 21, 2012, at 1:00 am to 5:00 pm.    Find the brochure for the festival here.

The DogWood Festival  -  This is likely Atlanta’s best known and most beloved festival. Virtually every kind of art imaginable is represented including sculpture, paintings, pottery, jewelry, photography and much more.   In addition to the fine art for adults and art collectors, there is a Kids Village featuring huge inflatables, arts & crafts and face painting for all ages, as well as the ever-popular 24-foot rock-climbing wall.  Check out the festival guide.

Druid Hills Real Estate: Distinctive Natural Beauty

Why You Should Move to Druid Hills

Druid Hills is a suburb of Atlanta, GA. It is located in DeKalb County and according to the 2010 census, has a population of 14,568 people. Druid Hills is one of the most desirable neighborhoods to live in around Atlanta for families or single people. This is because its offers a quiet and safe environment while giving residents instant access to exciting city life.

Emory University is one of the draws of Druid Hills.  It is ranked 20th in the U.S. News & World Report among national universities. Emory was also named one of the magazine’s “New Ivies” in 2006. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention is also located here.

There are many parks in Druid Hills, which help to create a scenic place to live for residents. Some of these parks include Baker Woodland, Fernbank Forest, Medlock Park and Wesley Woods Park. Baker Woodland is home to over 100 different species of plants including oaks, tulip poplar, and beech and hickory trees.

Druid Hills has a large art community and is home to the Atlanta Boy Choir, located along South Ponce de Leon Avenue.
